 Valley Stream is a great place to enjoy quality suburban living. Located just fifteen miles east of Manhattan residents find a perfect balance of a small town and big city atmospheres. Valley Stream is the perfect place for a commuter regardless of which direction you’re heading. Valley Stream features two Long Island Rail Road stops that have regularly scheduled trains heading both east and west. For those looking to drive, there are entrance ramps to both the Southern State Parkway and Belt Parkway located within the town. The nearest airport, John F. Kennedy International is a mere six miles away.
Schools have always been a top priority for the village. The Valley Stream Central High School District, one of only three high school districts on Long Island, is comprised of three high schools. There are also three separate elementary school districts, Districts 13, 24 and 30, with a total of 10 schools.
Most students in the village attend Valley Stream Central High School. But students may now attend either of the other two high schools -- Valley Stream North and Valley Stream South -- with the permission of the district superintendent.
Nearly 90 percent of the high schools' Class of 2009 graduates earned Regents diplomas.
A district program encourages students to take the most rigorous academic program appropriate for their abilities. School officials say this accounts for the high percentage of Regents diplomas. The high schools offer advanced placement programs in 16 subjects. Valley Stream Central High School teaches grades 10-12. A separate junior high school, Valley Stream Memorial, teaches grades 7-9. Valley Stream North and Valley Stream South are combined junior-senior high schools for grades 7 through 12.
Small businesses, restaurants and franchise outlets crowd Merrick Road, Central Avenue and Rockaway Avenue. But for serious shopping there is the Green Acres mall which features over 200 stores and eateries.
Valley Stream State Park offers a nice retreat from the highly-developed residential area. Covering almost 100 acres, the park features nature trails, picnic areas with tables and grills, as well as children’s playgrounds. Its recreational facilities include baseball fields, horseshoes, volleyball, bocce ball, and basketball courts. Locals love to take in the fresh air on the half-mile walking course that features 15 stations where walkers can complete a variety of stretching and strengthening exercises.
The main village-owned recreation area, the 36-acre Hendrickson Park, has three outdoor swimming pools, a fitness trail, tennis and handball courts and lakeside promenades. The nine-acre Barrett Park is in the 1920's vintage Gibson neighborhood south of Sunrise Highway. The park has two baseball fields, a playground, a roller hockey ring and handball and basketball courts. The 13-acre Firemen's Memorial Park has baseball and football fields and is a center for local sports teams. These parks are free for village residents.
